DEMO PERFORMANCE of "Intel Core i7" STARTS!!

Bookmark and Share

The new Intel CPU "Core i7" (Development Codename:Nehalem) 's demo performance kicked off at numbers of PC parts shops in Akihabara.

The Intel "Core i7" is a quad-core CPU that is said to be the next main CPU. Unlike previous Core 2 Quad series, Core i7 has 4 CPU cores and supports the Hyper-Threading feature used by Pentium 4, makes it possible to run 2 threads each up as much as 8 threads per set. The socket is the new "LGA1366".

Also, the memory controller is installed within the CPU that previously was on the chipset side. It significantly reduce the memory latency between the CPU and memory - and by less waiting time, significant improvement on processing ability can be expected. Another feature is the new faster serial-bus called "QPI" that replaces FSB. The CPU feature is changed from 2nd to 3rd cashing memory system, each core having 32KB for its 1st, 256KB for 2nd, and 8MB shared cash memory as the 3rd.

The line up is  "Core i7-920" "Core i7-940" "Core i7-965 Extreme Edition". And the models that were shown in demo were the "Core i7-920" and "Core i7-965 Extreme Edition" from both ends of the spectrum. Main specs are as follows  ( Movement Clock/ L3 Cash/ Memory/ TDP/ QPI)

"Core i7-920" 2.66GHz/8MB/DDR3-800or1067/130W/4.8GT/sec
"Core i7-940" 2.93GHz/8MB/DDR3-800or1067/130W/4.8GT/sec
"Core i7-965 Extreme Edition" 3.20GHz/8MB/DDR3-800or1067(without lock)/130W/6.4GT/sec

According to some shops that released their price and date of sales, all models are expected to go out sometime in November,"Core i7-920" being in the mid 30,000s,  "Core i7-940" from mid to late 60,000s and  "Core i7-965 Extreme Edition" naerly up to 12,000 (in Japanese yen).

en_akiba20081104__a.jpgDOSPARA Akihabara-Honten had a Demo using  two X58 by Intel and MSI.
Althogh the CPU differs, it is the only shop in Akihabara to demonstrate using 2 models.

Main set-up for MSI Intel "Core i7-965 Extreme Edition" CPU,  "Eclipse SLI" motherboard, 3 "DDR3-1333"(1GB) memory, and "GeForce 9800 GTX+" video card. As for Intel, "Core i7-920" CPU, Intel "DX58SO" motherboard,  3 "DDR3-1333"(1GB) memory,
and "GeForce 9800 GTX+" video card.

A watt checker was connected to MSI side to measure electrical power usage and
measured 140W  when idoling , and 220W while loading. Other benchmarks, such as using RAMDISK were being measured.
